Daily J have smashed it out of the park once again, with the indie rock band of brothers today releasing their highly anticipated second studio album, SCATTERBRAINS.
Marking a new direction for the band while still carrying those classic Daily J summer undertones, SCATTERBRAINS explores the darker side of the moon; diving into a mix of moods and emotions. The title SCATTERBRAINS, as the band expand, “reflect that contrast, with songs that range from happy to sad, inquisitive to outright mad. It’s a rollercoaster of feeling, and we hope it resonates with our listeners in a real and relatable way.”

Producer Joe Faris was at the helm of the album, working with Daily J in the evolution of their sound from their debut album VENUS ATE MARS with the hit song "Left Me Like Summer", to the new energy of today’s release. Still harnessing Daily J’s signature sound of vibrant surf guitar riffs and lush harmonies, SCATTERBRAINS delves into some moments of darker and more ethereal undertones, with introspective lyrics exploring themes of disconnection, self-reflection, and the bittersweet nature of growing up.
The album’s lead single ‘For Your Leisure’ captures this new energy; its darker verses are packed with momentum, opening up to an uplifting, catchy chorus bringing a fresh dynamic to the band's sound and making it one of the most exciting tracks on the album. "‘For Your Leisure’ feels like it’s pushing us out of our comfort zone in the best way. It feels like a natural evolution for the band, and if all goes well, it could be a glimpse into where we’re headed next.”
With SCATTERBRAINS lyrically digging deeper into who Daily J are as a band and also as individuals, ‘For Your Leisure’ explores “finding light in the chaos - the lost nights, the reckless moments, and the search for something real in all the wrong places”, says the band. “It’s a song for anyone who’s ever felt adrift but still hopeful, caught between the thrill of the unknown and the longing for something deeper.”
Daily J have been teasing the album over the past year, releasing several hit singles; the infectious ‘Sunday Stitches‘, the introspective ‘Tastes Like Forever‘, the nostalgic anthem ‘Happy Slides‘, and ‘Cheap Tequila Sunrise‘. All four singles each debuted in the Hot 20 Aotearoa Singles Chart, received spins from Radio Hauraki and Bayrock, as well as earning coverage from the likes of Rolling Stone AU/NZ, Sniffers, NZ Herald and more.
To celebrate the album, Daily J are heading on their biggest Australasian tour to date. Performing at Wellington’s San Fran on Friday, March 21 and culminating in their largest-ever Auckland performance The Powerstation on Friday March 28, the upcoming tour will give fans an unforgettable night as the band showcase SCATTERBRAINS live for the first time.
Daily J is made up of three brothers Jayden, Jonny and Jesse Paul and their good mate Rick Everard. The band has a hard-earned reputation as one of New Zealand music’s most successful exports, with tens of millions of streams across platforms and sold-out tours across countries.
Don’t miss your chance to witness this thrilling new chapter in the band’s journey, with the new album SCATTERBRAINS out today and two huge New Zealand shows on the horizon.
